WORLD MASTERS TIME TRIAL CHALLENGE 2009

Congratulations to the guys from Horizon 100 CC in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on winning the 2009 WMTTC from BC Masters – by just 12 seconds. The closest finish to date was in 2006, when Edmonton pipped Hamilton by just 6 seconds.

Saskatoon have been in the competition since 2005, when they finished 2nd, less than one minute behind Edmonton. This year their team aggregate of 1:21:03 was a significant 10-minute improvement on their previous best

The best plus for 2009 was achieved by 74-year-old Ken Orr of Horizon 100 with +20:56; the best actual time was set by EdmontonŐs Bruce Copeland with 51:56 (40 km); and the oldest counting rider was 81-year-old John Edmunds of Edmonton, who will be competing in the 2009 World Masters Games down in Sydney, NSW this October.

We had 22 participants on a beautiful day. No cloud, 22ˇC, next to no wind (SE at 2.9 km/h), a quite flat course (101 m total elevation change), and new pavement with good shoulders.

The BC Masters were once again in Grand Forks to ride the 40 km individual time trial course. A little bit of rain early in the morning gave way to blue skies and a slight wind out of the south. We had a very strong group of riders this year with 28 riders taking on the generally flat out and back course.

The change to the Wye Road course close to the city, as used for the National Championships back in the early 1990Ős, helped attract a good field of 25 riders. Unfortunately a dead calm early morning gave way to a stiff breeze before the start, resulting in a headwind finish.

The course is out and back from a few kilometres east of Laidley, out through a non existent town called Mulgowie to the turn at a similar place called Thornton. You may be able to identify it on Google Maps. There was very little wind on the day, so it did not play a part and the weather was fine and sunny -about 25ˇC.

The course is a regional country road with the road surface varying from bad to abysmal. We would love to have a fast flat hot mix surface but we have to go a long way out of town to obtain a Police permit for the event.

We have had a bit more interest in the event this year and it is a common feeling amongst the boys that we should put in some more effort this year to try and get a few more countries involved in the concept.

The Grand Forks Cycling Club held their TT on the usual TT course, this being the same one used last year and the same course the BC Masters Cycling Association uses for their WMTTC effort. While we did ride under dry conditions, an approaching storm brought strong winds and this made for a very long, hard ride for the finish line. Just like last year our rider numbers were down (might be time to move the date of our TT?) and we only put 7 riders on the line. Our best effort of the day was from our strong man Brian Marsh (52 years). He posted a 54:12 which actually bettered his time from the previous months TT, which was run under much more favourable conditions. An extraordinary effort. The rest of us struggled in the conditions and none of us managed to come close to our best times. Oh well, thatŐs Time Trialing! Fun was had by all anyway and we look forward to next yearsŐ ride.. Thanks Edmonton Masters.

Blizzard BC, Fort St. John, BC, September 13th

The Blizzard Masters gave it a good try, but could not duplicate last years 7th place finish - they were one rider short of the necessary five to beat the age time standard.

Riders Pat Ferris, Roger St. Jean, Bob Andrews and Sam Keats had a decent total to better

their personal age standards but lacked the qualifying fifth rider. A few key riders were missing due to other commitments, injury or away.
