WORLD MASTERS TIME TRIAL CHALLENGE 2008
Congratulations to the BC Masters riders on winning the WMTTC on their first attempt, recording the best aggregate team plus since 2000, and also on becoming the first team to beat Edmonton Masters! It was especially nice to welcome Blizzard and Grand Forks to the competition - two small centres with an obviuosly keen and enthousiastic bunch of riders. Roll on 2009!

The BC Masters took their top 5 times from a field of 28 riders. This was the first time the BC Masters have used the Grand Forks Cycling Clubs 40km TT course. The course is an out and back which runs mostly on the North Fork road, which was laid on top of the old rail grade. As such there is no more than a 2% grade on the first and last 15 km. The top end of the course goes up Brown Creek road and starts with a 4% bump, followed by a 2% drag up to the turn around. Conditions were pretty good on race day. A wind from the south meant a head wind for the push home. Our fastest ride of the day was a 55:44 for the men and a 1:02:18 for the women. Neither of these times were fast enough to make the top 5 of the Age Standard times. Thanks to the Edmonton Masters for including us in this years WMTTC. We look forward to 2009.

The change in course from Darwell to Bon Accord seems to have been popular, as almost everyone who rode or volunteered was at the start a whole hour before first man off, and we had almost a surfeit of volunteers as opposed to last year when just two people ran the whole event. However, on the day the wind was blowing quite well out of the SE, making for a hard last 15 km or so. Opinions on the course were somewhat varied. It is interesting to note that this year our team comprised one each from categories B, C, D, E, and F.

The flat 20 km out-and-back Binbrook course greeted us this year with very surprisingly calm yet overcast conditions for the 9:00 a.m. event start. We had a sizeable field of riders in attendance this year - probably in preparation for the Provincial TT Championships coming up the following weekend. The weather conditions soon turned to what we feared might happen though, as on the return leg for the riders the dark storm clouds opened up, coinciding with the development of N.E. winds approx. 10 - 15 km/h. The temperature dropped from the early 19¡C to 15¡C as the riders battled through driving rain and cross-head winds. Everyone finished in good shape and strengthened their character in the process. Good to see the participation in the WMTTC has increased this year - it's obviously catching on! Thank you on behalf of our club for the opportunity to be a part of this competition.

The Grand Forks Cycling Club held their 40k TT during the last week of August. The weather was a little sketchy in the morning but turned fine by the time we sent the first rider off. Due to vacations and schedules only 10 of our riders made it out. Our fastest ride of the night went to our TT man Murray Behl, who posted a 59:28 - not a bad time for someone getting a hip replacement in two weeks. We are not what you would call a TT club - only one of our riders has a TT bike, we do time trials every second Thursday, although only the 16km distance. For most of the riders this was their first, and only, 40 km TT of the year. But I think being a part of the WMTTC will help to inspire our riders to work on their TT skills. Thanks for putting this on and we look forward to next year and hopefully a big improvement.
